A tennis court is a stack. At the bottom is compacted subbase, then an asphalt or concrete slab, then an acrylic coating system of resurfacer and color coats. Repairs applied to the top of that stack can only fix things that originate in the top of that stack.

Base defects originate below the coating. Structural cracks, heaving, settlement, joint reflection, and broad ponding all live in the slab or the subbase. Filling them treats the visible symptom. The movement continues and the crack reappears, which is why the honest question to ask any contractor is not “can you fill this” but “what is making this crack, and will your fix outlive the cause”.
The reliable field test is history. If this crack has been filled before and came back in the same line, it is a base defect. Diagnose it that way regardless of what the surface looks like.
Crack repair methods, and what each one is actually for
Flexible acrylic crack filler
The standard treatment for hairline and non structural cracks. The filler is worked into the crack, cured, and coated over. It is inexpensive, fast, and correct for shrinkage cracking. It is also the most commonly misapplied repair on the market, because it is cheap enough that crews default to it on cracks it was never designed to hold.
Rout and fill
The crack is widened into a clean channel, cleaned out, and filled with a patch binder and sand mix. Routing gives the filler enough cross section to move with the crack instead of shearing off at the edges. This is the minimum credible treatment for a working structural crack.
Fabric or membrane crack repair systems
A reinforcing fabric, mesh, or elastomeric membrane is bonded over the prepared crack so that base movement is distributed across a wider area instead of concentrating at a single line. This is the longest lasting repair short of reconstruction, and it is the right call for a court with a handful of persistent structural cracks and an otherwise sound base. It is not a cure. It buys years, typically 3 to 7 in Connecticut’s freeze-thaw climate, and the cost per crack is high enough that a court with widespread structural cracking is usually past the point where this pencils out.
Full overlay or reconstruction

The American Sports Builders Association standard is the nickel test: one hour after rainfall stops, no standing water on the court should be deeper than a nickel, which is roughly 1/16 inch. Where the water sits tells you which repair applies:
- Scattered small puddles across the court are surfacing tolerance. Acrylic leveling compound, built up in thin lifts and feathered flush, corrects them permanently on a sound base.
- Water pooled along one edge, one end, or in a consistent band is base settlement or a drainage failure. When acrylic peels in sheets or bubbles up in blisters, the instinct is to treat it as a coating defect. It usually is not. Delamination generally means moisture is moving up through the slab and breaking the bond from underneath, or that the original coating went down over a dirty, damp, or improperly prepared surface.
Patching the peeled area without addressing the moisture path produces a repair that fails at the edges of the patch within a season or two. The sequence that works is: remove all failed coating back to sound material, identify and correct the moisture source, then rebuild the coating stack.
